Peruvian President Dina Boluarte was reportedly subjected to a physical assault during a ceremony marking the commencement of a road asphalt project in Ayacucho, as per the report by the Peruvian official news agency, Andina.
An official statement detailed that a group of women approached Ms. Boluarte with one member of this group going as far as physically pulling her hair. Following this attack, the woman was restrained and apprehended by the police as suggested in the report.
This collective has reportedly identified themselves as being associated with a group which represents the families of those who were lost in political protests that took place in Peru towards the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023.
The outrage to the incident was voiced by Peru's Prime Minister, Alberto Otárola, expressing his condemnation on the violent act stating: "We all lose as a country with violence ... This unfortunate event has endangered the integrity of the head of State and this is very serious."
Government institutions have expressed their condemnation of the incident, which includes the Ministry of Women, who made a statement saying: "We call for this act not to be repeated ever against any woman. We must eliminate all forms of violence against women in our country."
