Florida-based Senator Marco Rubio has expressed concern about the increasing influence of the global economic coalition known as BRICS. Rubio has written a piece for RealClearWorld in which he voices concern about the possible negative impacts of BRICS' expansion. He indicates this might compromise the SWIFT payment system and could weaken the United States' ability to impose sanctions using the dollar.
Beginning on the first day of the New Year, BRICS expanded its membership to include Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Iran. Not only did this double the size of the trading group, but it also increased its appeal as an alternative to the Western financial system led by America and Europe. Rubio highlights that this shift could undermine U.S. efforts to curb international conflicts and instances of oppression through the use of sanctions.
Senator Rubio has pointed out how China may be using the BRICS organisation to prop up Russia's military activities in Ukraine. According to him, BRICS members are pooling their foreign currency reserves to lend substantial sums to developing nations. It is alleged this is an attempt to pit these countries against the U.S. and other Western nations. This, Rubio warns, gives China an avenue to fund Russia’s activity in Ukraine, despite international sanctions against Moscow.
In the previous year, BRICS welcomed Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates in a bid to challenge the current world order dominated by the United States. Yet, Argentina abruptly cancelled its plan to join BRICS after the inauguration of President Javier Milei last month. Five new members now constitute the economically-aligned nations.
